Over the last 3 years, I've talked to 1500+ JavaScript engineers worldwide.
They all have one thing in common.
Their to-do lists are full… 7 courses, 5 side-projects and infinite interview prep GitHub repos.
But, they are still stuck.
They missed the most important point about being Senior.
It’s not about how much you know.
It’s about how well.
Knowing Webpack, Vite and Parcel is nice.
But if you don’t know how to deeply configure one of them at scale, is as good as nothing.
The first thing we do with our new mentees is getting rid of 90% of stuff they are doing that is not actually working.
And help them focus on the 10% that does.
You can also apply it this week:
Pick ONE category (frontend, backend, or infrastructure)
Go deep into the fundamentals – pick one core concept (React rendering, web caching, backend security) and master it.
Apply and iterate - try to implement what you learned in one real world project (can be at work, or even a side-project). Reflect on what you learned. For me, journaling helps a lot.
Ohh, and let me know how it worked :)
By the way, if you want a structured path to Senior, with accountability and feedback directly from me and Bogdan…
Check out how we can help you here!
Have an amazing week,
Dragos
P.S. One of my students kept asking me how to make the most out of AI coding tools. I guess a better question to ask yourself is “Where will I be when the bubble is over?”... Fancy terms like MCP or RAG might not stand the test of time. Sure, keep an eye of them. But keep getting better at core software engineering. That’s what going to pay your bills for years to come. Cheers :)
