I had 83 calls with 74 different JavaScript Engineers in the last 3 months.
They all told me the SAME thing.
“I feel like a 2021 Senior in the 2026 market.”
They feel the market has moved. AI changed the game.
There's now a gap between their skills and what companies expect.
Yes, they are right about the problem.
But they are wrong about the solution.
So, they try to fix it:
- They rewrite their resume a million times with AI. Still, no one calls back.
- They start grinding LeetCode. While doubting whether algorithms even matter anymore.
- They do side projects. Wasting precious time that could go into the job hunt instead.
The problem is they try to prove they are "Senior enough"...
By doing exactly what a Junior dev would do.
The coding, the projects, etc.
But in this post-AI era, all of that can be done by LLMs.
Claude Code and Copilot can code pretty well. They write tests and documentation. They even offer System Design suggestions.
You know what AI agents cannot do?
Proof of work.
AI tools can do the work. But they cannot guarantee it.
They cannot say: "Yes, this is the best way to build this system. And I am willing to put my name behind it."
Making decisions is easy.
Taking responsibility for the consequences of those decisions is hard.
Think about it: bankers get paid millions of dollars just to look at spreadsheets. Same for airplane pilots, who mostly fly on autopilot.
So if you want to stay in demand in the current market...
If you aim to close this Senior gap...
You have to focus on the skills that let you guarantee the quality of the code being shipped. Even if it was written by an LLM:
- Fundamentals that are deep enough to catch AI bugs.
- End-to-end ownership AI will never have.
- System Design & Architecture: AI can enumerate best practices, but it cannot really understand the WHY behind them.
- Critical thinking beyond the status quo (LLMs are making today's decisions with data from yesterday).
Boring? Maybe.
But... your job is to guarantee.
And you can't guarantee code you can't evaluate.
