Happy Thursday by the way.
Today I made the mistake of reading the News (which are never positive) and based on what I’ve read, things are not pretty at all.
First of all the economy is stuck and will stay stuck.
There have been layoffs everywhere and of course, AI is taking over more and more stuff.
Do you regret opening this email?
I don’t blame you.
But wait, there is a positive side to all this :)
Here are 3 ways you can make this crazy situation work for you:
1. Be greedy when others are fearful - copying Warren Buffet here, but when it comes to times like this, most people’s instinct is defensive. Make no moves and wait until the bad time passes. Or even worse, give up together and do something else.
Because of this what really happens in the market is competition is lower than ever for great developers at a point when companies need talent the most (when the budget is tight, you can only hire developers that will be productive).
As always the bar will turn in the favor of developers that are either really experienced or know their shit (for the lack of a better word, developers that have a systematic way of thinking, master their craft and best practices). The most fun and effective way to become on of those top 3% devs is with great quality mentorship.
The discounted price for Software Mastery closes tomorrow (Friday), so book a call now unless is too late. <https://www.theseniordev.com/apply>
2. Double down on fundamentals - they are called "fundamentals" because they don’t change right? Having endurance, patience and a long-term view was good career advice 100 years ago and will still be good advice 100 years from now.
A solid understanding of the Web will serve you well no matter what you end up doing (backend, frontend, or even Rust, now that everyone is in a rush to migrate their stuff lol). This means you are much better off mastering the language and the environment where your code is running, instead of the frameworks and libraries built on top of it.
3. Use AI to your advantage - everybody is talking about ChatGPT, but what is really happening is as tools get more and more capable, software teams are getting smaller and smaller. This trend already started back in the days with Cloud automation when major providers started swallowing functionality (a.k.a. Just put it on AWS and they do everything for you…), but now is just getting faster.
So the average dev is required to know a lot more to be able to deliver. Years after Bootcamps invented this phrase, we are finally entering the age of the real “full-stack developer”.
Anyway, regardless of where you fall in the spectrum of “afraid of being laid off” to “irreplaceable developer able to kick ass”, Sofware Mastery will help you.
But only if you enroll.
So apply here to see if you qualify. The “old price” promotion ends tomorrow with a price hike coming up in April. <https://www.theseniordev.com/apply>

P.S. This is one of the last emails I will send you about this as I don’t want to be shouting always the same thing. From Monday next week I will go back to my usual “here is how to make it big as a developer” style.
