Times are tough.

Despite what we’ve been told, the software job market has not recovered yet.

Layoffs are still happening.

The job market is still way too competitive with hundreds of applicants for every position. Headlines like “You should NOT learn how to code because AI can do it” are at the top of our newsfeeds.

Ohh the madness of the crowds. Big masses of people amplify whatever message you give them. Being positive or negative.

That is why you always have bubbles in the economy. Humans listen blindly to other humans. Giving in to either greed or desperation.

To follow the tradition of this newsletter, I will keep the tone uplifting with a “go get them attitude”.

The first thing I should tell you is:

Don’t quit.

I see many developers going through this situation questioning their career choices and looking for greener pastures. That’s like thinking about getting divorced after the first time you argued with your partner.

Smart people understand that life has ups and downs.

The same with the economy.

We are in the Valley of Death. We’ve been in it for a while. But we are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The grass is not greener on the other side. The grass is greener when you water it.

Now regarding AI and ChatGPT. I have no doubts generative AI will change the way developers work. It will also change the way lawyers, doctors, and government employees work. It will change the way we learn, teach, and live.

But, it won’t stop it.

It will most likely accelerate it. It might lead us to the best of times. Legacy code will be updated or migrated. Full applications will be re-written. More applications will be built.

A developer’s job will become more interesting. Less time doing repetitive tasks, more time supervising AI, and thinking about the real problem. Not the code.

Doesn’t sound like a bad deal.

But, if you quit now, you won’t even live to see it happening.

This doesn't mean you just have to hang in there and hope. You can do things. Take action. Improve your knowledge of what you already know. Learn new technologies.

Whatever you do, keep on moving! I will be waiting for you on the other side.
