“Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.” - Bill Gates
So true.
Do you know why?
Because it is impossible to know what you don’t know.
For example, when I started as a developer, I knew how to code…
What I had no idea about was how to test my code, make it extendable and take it to production.
I didn’t know how to influence technical decisions, how to architect applications, and dozen other things that developers have to do to ship working software besides just coding it.
Or when I started theSeniorDev almost 3 years ago…
I knew I had the knowledge to help people due to my experience writing code for years and the dozens of developers that I’d already helped at that point.
What I didn’t know was how complex packaging my knowledge will be, so it could reach the people that needed it the most.
Once again, you can’t know what you don’t know.
Go ahead and read all the books on software development. Watch thousands of videos. If you are like most developers, by the end of it, you will still feel like you are missing something.
You are missing what people call “tacit knowledge”. The kind of knowledge that cannot be captured through words alone.
Funny enough, tacit knowledge is the one thing that sets the experts apart from the amateurs.
And you know the best way to get that kind of knowledge?
Through social interaction, feedback, and deliberate practice… That’s exactly the secret sauce of our Software Mastery Mentorship Program <https://www.theseniordev.com/software-mastery>!
We can help you figure out what you don’t know.
And help you put in place a systematic step-by-step plan to fix it. Apply here for a chat with me to see if you qualify! <https://www.theseniordev.com/apply>
January has been packed, and February feels about the same :)
Yesterday I was having lunch with a friend, and when she saw my calendar she asked me how I sleep at night… It was full of appointments!
And by the way, I sleep like a baby! Nothing puts you to sleep faster than knowing that you’ve done the best your could during the day.
I am getting side-tracked…
If you think we can help you, apply here <https://www.theseniordev.com/apply>!
And next time you try to learn something complex and struggle, keep in mind “tacit knowledge.”
It might just be what's stopping you from making the progress you want!
Take care, Dragos
