Monday motivation 💰

Life is short.

Time is the most valuable resource you have.

I knew this when I was in my twenties.

But I only knew it “intellectually”.

Now as a grown up male on the wrong side of my thirties, with a receding hairline and gums I "really" know life is very short.

I know second matters.

I try to waste no time. This means more focus, less BS, more time with my ageing parents and more time spend with people (instead of devices). And it means getting more sh*t done.

A lot of developers know intellectually that they need to improve their skills.

That the market is changing and to stay competitive in this new landscape, being able to put a few React components together is not enough.

But it takes going through layoffs and having to get back into the market for them to “really” know the market has changed.

I don’t want you to get to that.

Looking for a job when you need it the most or worse, staying in a job you hate because you are afraid of going to the market and getting another one is one of the worst experiences you can have. It will affect you emotionally, financially and physically. I don’t wish it on anyone.

Better to make improving your skills a habit and not wait until is too late.

P.S. I talked to many developers and it feels to me they are downplaying the importance of money. They tell me, money doesn't matter to them, it is more about learning. But learning is a means to an end.

My guess is that they've been conditioned to think like that. Society tells you that if you want money you should feel bad because you have such a greedy soul! In this way you keep the working class in line. Without the use of brute force. Better use ideology and shame!

After collecting 7 million data points from more than 33,000 participants a study from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences confirms that money does influence happiness and, contrary to previous influential research on the subject suggesting that this plateaus above $75,000, there was no dollar value at which it stopped mattering to an individual's well-being. Which means, the more money you have, the happier you will be (exception to be made). Go ask for that raise, apply for that job, and book that call with me… Science says it will not only make you smarter, but happier overall.

Note: having money does not guarantee happiness. You still have to keep yourself healthy, take care of your relationships and do something that fulfils you. But it is much easier to do all that when you have money. Chauuu
