In my three years of helping over 200 developers get to the Senior level and beyond, I can’t think of a most recurrent problem than framework obsession.
Developers constantly wonder if the framework they use is better than what they saw on Hacker News 2 weeks ago.
First of all, obsessing over stuff is a bad idea in life in general.
But when it comes to frameworks, it is even worse because it limits your understanding of software development as a whole.
There are two main reasons why you should not fall into the trap of obsessing over frameworks:
Number 1: Most frameworks are built around similar concepts.
React, Angular, and Vue might have different approaches but try to solve the same problem. Building user-friendly and highly performant user interfaces on the Web.
This has particular challenges regardless of the framework used, such as state management, data fetching, and reactivity.
You will have to master these concepts regardless of the framework you choose.
Number 2: Frameworks copy each other all the time.
We’ve seen it with React and Vue again and again. Regardless of the framework you work with, 80% of the stuff you will learn will be more or less the same.
A better approach is to focus on the patterns behind frameworks.
They are less likely to change.
For example, even if React goes away, component-based architectures won’t. This is a universal principle that applies even beyond web development.
So, spend more of your energy understanding the principles behind frameworks.
This way, you'll become a versatile developer who can adapt to changes and stay relevant for years to come.
