Most frontend engineers I talk to are super scared about the future.

Even at Senior level.

Asking themselves, will frontend even exist in a few years?

Or is AI going to eat it all up.

Gergley Osloz at The Pragmatic Engineer thinks frontend is on its way out:

"Frontend-only engineers are disappearing. [...] I’ve observed full-stack engineers become the norm at many places, who can do both frontend and backend development. Especially with AI, there is no reason a proficient frontend engineer should not work on the backend as well, [..]."

I disagree.

Sure, it is true that full-stack roles are more and more in demand... But that's not because frontend is disappearing.

It is because companies are looking to cut costs.

Looking for devs who can do the work of a full engineering team.

Frontend won't disappear because AI doesn't change the fundamental law of division of labor that Henry Ford discovered more than a century ago: specialization beats generalization any given time.

Frontend is a complex domain.

With millions of edge cases and a complex platform it runs on (the browser itself).

A "specialized" frontend engineer will be a lot more productive than a "generalist," assuming both are using AI.

So, the game right now is to show enough technical depth to be considered that "specialized" frontend engineer.

More questions and answers below:

1. What does "Senior Front-end" mean in 2026?

At it's core, front-end is still front-end.

Even when a company says "full stack," what they actually want is a strong front-end engineer first and familiarity with the full stack second.

To put FE skills in 3 buckets:

1. Deep FE Skills:

At Senior level, frontend today requires real technical depth in the browser, JavaScript, and your specific framework (React, Angular, etc).

You should be able to go a few levels deep into these topics in a technical interview (Event Loop, Rendering, Web Performace, FE Architecture: Microfrontends, BFF).

2. Fullstack Understanding

Then you need enough full-stack understanding to talk to backend people without a tech lead holding your hand.

Focus on backend fundamentals (basic API design, networking, authorisation) and infrastructure (DevOps basics, Docker, and a bit of AWS).

3. AI fluency.

You need a strong opinion on AI coding & tooling (more on that later), but applied to the frontend (like FE-specific MCPs for the tools used in the FE, like Figma, Excalidraw, etc).

The nice part is that even if FE Engineering disappears in the coming years... If you learn these skills, you will be able to pivot quickly towards whatever’s next (like AI Engineer, which is a full-stack dev who knows how to integrate AI).

Ohh, and by the way, Bogdan and I can help you get to Senior faster. With a clear plan, accountability, and feedback.

2. Should I learn full stack? If yes, then how much full stack should be enough? And what’s the best way to do it?

Yes, you should learn fullstack.

How much? To the level where you can explain the whole software cycle end-to-end to a newbie. Including the backend and deployment part.

Check out this video and this video.

3. In technical interviews, how much System Design do I need to know? And what does system design look like in the frontend?

As a frontend, you don’t need advanced backend system design (database sharding, distributed caching, service meshess, etc).

But you do need to know system design applied to the frontend. Some interesting architectures are Microfrontends, BFF (backend for frontend pattern), API gateways, and anything else that has to do with scalability and performance in the FE (bundle optimizations, all-around caching, etc.). Check out this video too.

4. I use AI tools daily but feel like it is not enough… What is the "correct" AI-assisted workflow for a frontend engineer in 2026?

Bogdan and I are going to make an in-depth video about this soon.

For now, focus on the main MCPs used in the frontend (Figma, Shadcn MCP, Excalidarw, etc). Check out this video too for AI coding interview questions.

Regarding pure AI knowledge, you should get familiar with the basics of context engineering, frontend-related AI skills, and finally some LLM integration knowledge.

P.S. If we get to 100 GitHub stars, I will convince Bogdan to extend the AI skills to frontend architecture as well. Star it here.

5. What is a realistic average time for me to land a new FE position? I’ve been looking for many months now… When does the gap start to be problematic?

Anything more than 6 months means you are doing something fundamentally wrong. Check out this video to understand how your interview

6. What’s the best resource to prepare for FE interviews?

theSeniorDev Youtube channel lol :)

Really, it is the most in-depth frontend & full-stack stuff you will find out there.

7. When do I know I am “interview-ready” as an FE engineer?

You are interview ready when you are confident you can answer most FE-related questions without any red flags (big gaps in knowledge).

Interview prep should not take you longer than 6 to 8 weeks, unless you are going around in too many circles.

8. Even when I clear all interview rounds, I get told they found someone “more Senior” and get no feedback. Why is that?

Most likely because you did a good job in the interview… But you failed to signal seniority during the interview.

Usually because you didn’t mention more advanced topics. Check all the videos above.

9. I was Senior at my last company. But in the market, I feel like a Junior. What’s the difference, and how can I fix it?

You can get to Senior in a certain company just by being familiar with the codebase and business logic. That doesn’t mean you are a Senior for the market.

Senior for the market means you can pass a Senior-level interview, and later deliver at Senior level. That takes a bit more work.

Those are most of the questions I had written so far.

But I wanted to ask you too… Is there any question you would like me to add to the list?

If I get 6 more questions, I will convince Bogdan to cover all of them together with me in our next podcast episode here. Check it out here.

Till the next one,

Dragos
