Here is a bold statement.

Most developers work too hard and make too little!

In my experience over the last three years of mentoring and coaching devs, the average developer is at least 30% underpaid.

At least 30%.

Think about what that means.

It means they spend around 3 hours per day working for free!

Why does this happen?

Simple.

Salary raises in tech are almost non-existent.

You can spend years working for more or less the same salary. Unless you get a counteroffer.

Then companies would be more than willing to give you a raise.

But, in the current market, most developers are unable to get a counteroffer. Some can’t even get interviews.

As a result, they get stuck where they are.

Underpaid and undervalued.

It is true that the market is not easy. But this is not the reason why most developers fail when trying to get another offer.

The reason - they don’t do enough interviews.

They get a call from a recruiter here and there. Maybe a technical interview every month or so. They put all their energy into that.

And when it doesn’t work… they blame the market.

I can empathize. Interviewing sucks.

You get ghosted. Ignored. And you spend hours working for free.

But what if I told you all your problems… from feeling stuck and underpaid to lacking confidence in your skills and not being able to get another offer are due to one thing only?

And that if you solve that one thing, everything will become instantly easier...

Ready?

You need to do more interviews.

You need to go out there and talk to companies. Interview. Get offers.

Regardless of whether you are looking for a job or a promotion or you simply want to see where to stand with respect to the market.

Most developers don’t interview enough.

Why?

They don’t have the time.

They don’t have the opportunity.

Or they quit too fast.

The good news is that all those things are fixable!

Yes.

To gain time you put in place an efficient process. To get more opportunities, you build top-notch digital assets like CV and LinkedIn profile.

And to avoid quitting too fast you understand the law of large numbers and fix your mindset.

Once you do all that everything is easier.

It might seem like a lot, but is not. And is a lot better than being stuck in a job you don’t like, with a small salary and hope as your only strategy.

In the next emails, I will go over those things more in-depth!

For now, have yourself a productive Tuesday and a great week ahead :)

Take care, -Dragos
