I am swamped with work today.

Many of you booked me.

I hope I get the chance to talk to you soon. Regardless, I wanted to write you a short email.

An email about a trend I keep on seeing talking to dozens of developers every week.

It seems to me that most want the exact same thing: freedom.

Freedom to work remotely.

Freedom to the market and get a better salary. Yes, most want a much better salary.

Freedom to pick the companies they want to work for. To choose their tech stack. And even the number of vacation days.

Yes, some of them are minimalists who want to earn more money so they can work less.

My guess is this trend will stay with us for decades.

People want freedom. They also want choices. They always did.

But this kind of freedom is not given.

It is earned.

To have options, you need to have leverage. You need to be in a place where your employer needs you more than you need them because other employers need you as much.

The more in demand your skills are, the more negotiation power you have. And the more freedom you can afford to negotiate for.

The moral of the story is if you want to increase your freedom...

You need to improve your skills.

The foundation of wealth is indeed education.
