I hope you are taking it easy for today :)
By the way, did I ever tell you the story of the baby elephant?
As travelers passed by and observed the elephants, they were confused. These huge creatures were held by a tiny rope.
Why didn’t the elephants break the hope and escape?
It turns out, when the elephants were young and much smaller, they were tied with the same rope. They tried to break it back then, but they couldn’t.
So, they formed a belief that they couldn’t break the rope. And that belief is holding them back now.
Sounds familiar?
That’s because, as software developers, we do the same.
You do a technical interview, and you screw it up. You start thinking you are not good at interviews. You don’t try again. You stay stuck in an unfulfilling job, underpaid, and undervalued.
You get corrected in a technical discussion. You start thinking you don’t know what you are doing. You never try again. You work hard, but nobody notices it. You never get promoted and stagnate.
I can go on and o, but here is the catch:
Negative beliefs are a prison for your mind…
Because when you don’t think it is possible so you don’t even try!
You are probably able to achieve more than you think! And you don’t need some magic powers. Just a bit of focus effort.
And you know what’s weird? Sometimes a stranger can believe in us more than we believe in ourselves!
It happened to me with my first mentor. He told me he sees a huge potential in me. I could be a CTO one day or even lead a software company. I didn’t believe it.
But kept on working because I was afraid not to disappoint him!
Guess what, years after that work, I’ve been putting in manifested into some great stuff (not a CTO yet, but hey, my ambitions have changed since then).
It turns out, it is much easier to break negative beliefs when you have a mentor that believes in you!
