I bet you’ve heard the myth of the 10x engineer.
The mythical developer that’s able to deliver what the other 10 programmers would.
Most people believe being a 10x developer is about coding speed.
Or about solving problems faster.
It is not.
Why? The human brain has a limit. On top of that, time is scarce. No matter how fast you code or think, you can only get that much done in 8 hours a day.
This brings me to the main point of this email.
10x developers are more productive not because they are faster but because they work on the right things.
They use leverage.
What does leverage mean in software development?
Leverage means that if you have 5 projects you can be working on, and only 1 has a significant impact on the company you are working on, you pick that one.
Even if it means building an API for that Java legacy code, you are migrating and not playing with the latest stuff. You pick that one.
Leverage means you are focused on building the right thing.
Not on how to build it.
Overoptimizing a form by using memoization is not leverage. Building a small UI so the admin team can do their job more efficiently is leverage.
The good news is that finding leverage is a skill.
And like any skill, it can be learned.
