How do you see the developer job market?
In one wordโฆ
Not great.
Weโve got way too many candidates for way too few job positions.
When hiring, companies are looking for Senior level developers. Leaving Junior and Mid-level developers in the dust.
At the same time, inflation is only going up, lowering what the average salary can buy.
And AI is popping up, automating more and more developer jobs (Amazon Q for example can now update your codebase in a matter of minutes instead of days).
So, what should you do in this situation?
Simple.
If youโve been doing the right thingsโฆ Meaning improving your technical skills, practicing interviews, and selling yourself wellโฆ
Then you donโt have much to worry about. Keep at it and donโt get distracted.
If you havenโt done all those things, it might be time for you to start doing them!
The best strategy I recommend is to see where the market is going and move in that direction.
The market wants front-end developers that also have full-stack skills. If you are a front-end dev, diving into the full stack will pay off.
Talking about paying off, do you know what pays off the most in this situation?
Having a mentor.
Being guided by someone who knows the back and forths of the software job market. Someone who can point you in the right direction, give you feedback and keep you focused as you progress.
