Most times you know what you need to do.

But you don’t want to do it.

So you go and do something else. You check out a new shiny JavaScript framework. You spend time on Reddit looking for what other developers are working on.

You watch some YouTube video on something completely unrelated to what you are doing (a.k.a. Kubernetes).

You tell yourself you are not wasting time, because you are going to need it sometime.

Soon the day is over, and after spending hours in the Software Development Candy Land called YouTube you feel like you didn’t achieve much.

Your goals are still on hold.

You tell yourself that you still have tomorrow. But, tomorrow the cycle repeats. The risks are obvious, working hard but never reaching your full potential.

Developers procrastinate because it feels good.

Buying courses and learning new things makes you feel like you are making progress.

But, that progress is an illusion.

If getting to the next level was as easy as watching some Fireship videos about the latest JavaScript, every developer out there would be a Senior.

Real progress comes from doing hard, boring, and mundane things.

Like practicing the “fundamentals”, testing, debugging, reading documentation, or applying to jobs. Those boring tasks are the ones that pay off.

Software development is not high-frequency trading.

You don’t need to catch the wave. You need to finish the marathon.

How do you cure the shiny object syndrome?

Invert your thinking.

New is not sexy. New is not good. Old, boring, and proven is good.

In my case, after 10 years of writing code, I still work within the same tech stack. Four years after starting theSeniorDev our tech stack is almost the same.

I can’t tell you the number of people telling me we need to add more programming languages, more frameworks, and more technologies. Instead, Bogdan and I decided to focus.

The result?

Our training is the best in its category because it’s been fine-tuned hundreds of times. Expertise takes time to develop, whether you are writing code or teaching it.

Focus produces quality.

Chasing shiny stuff gets you high. But it doesn’t add much value.
