“I don’t know how it works, ChatGPT wrote it.”

This will probably be the programming meme of the decade.

With entire development teams not being fully aware of what their code does. And why it is built this way.

It is “the Future” they say. Software 2.0.

Junior Developers are being sold the idea that to get better. They only have to play with ChatGPT. It will teach them everything.

Kids are being told learning how to code is pointless. Go become a Tik Tok influencer.

AI will build software for us. The human brain is obsolete.

They forgot a bunch of things.

Programming is not coding. In the real world, programming is 80% reading code, 20% writing code (15% editing code, and 5% writing new code).

Even so, programming is only a tiny part of a developer’s job.

The rest?

Figuring out problems in the real world and how to solve them with software, sometimes by integrating already built libraries and frameworks, and other times by refactoring existing code.

But wait, we don’t need that anymore.

Ask AI in plain English, and it will wire the code for you.

Oh, we’ve been doing this for decades with developers. They are called requirements refinement meetings. And they are sold on earth.

AI did not make coding obsolete.

It just switched your programming language to the English language.

Which is not an improvement at all. But a terrible way to program. Error-prone and expensive.

But that’s for another email.
