the email I didn't want to write

I didn’t need to write this email.

Software mastery is almost complete. We filled our spots this month. Next month is already getting booked.

We are doing well. There’s no need for me to bother you.

But I wrote it because I had to.

Why?

I was on YouTube checking the kind of “advice” people are giving developers today.

And I am sad to say most of it was pretty bad.

Some of it was plain garbage.

Like one YouTuber advising developers to become generalists to survive layoffs. With technical interviews getting harder and harder any generalist would have a very hard time getting a job.

Now, I don’t think these people are bad.

They are just not qualified to give advice on the topic. They either repeat what they heard from other YouTubers or make up some advice that sounds good. Telling you what you want to hear, not what you need to hear.

The only way to give advice that works is first to solver the problem you are talking about.

Most of these YouTubers have not been in the market long. Some even got laid off and had a hard time getting a job afterward.

Which is why I advise you to take every “advice” you hear with a grain of salt.

I am not saying you should not listen to advice from famous YouTubers. Or read books and articles. But don’t take what you hear at face value.

Put it in the context of what you know.

In this example, if they tell you to become a generalist but you had technical interviews that were very specific in their questions… Listen to your experience instead of online advice.

One last note… Avoid negativity at all cost.

There is far too much negative stuff on the internet about how the market is doing, how AI is taking over, and how developers are better at opening a lemonade stand than writing code.

Eliminate those dead-end messages, or they will drag you down.

Things are not as bad as they say. Being a developer still pays off, with salaries reaching an all-time high. Life is still good and worth living.

Focus on what you can change, and that is yourself!
